Speech

Speech is the oral planning and execution of language.

Typical issues:

Language

Language is a socially shared code or system for representing concepts.

Typical issues:

  • Difficulty expressing thoughts, ideas, or needs verbally or in writing.

  • Difficulty understanding or processing language.

  • Difficulty with the social aspects of communication, including using language in context and understanding social cues.

  • Difficulty recognizing and decoding written words.

Voice

Voice is the signal carrier for speech.

Typical issues:

  • Difficulty in producing louder sounds.

  • Roughness

  • Breathiness

  • Unstable voice

  • Too much nasality

  • Unwanted vocal breaks

  • Tightness

  • and many other issues.

May cause by:

  • Functional causes e.g. habit

  • Vocal pathologies e.g. nodules and polyps.

  • Head and neck cancer

  • Puberty

  • Neurological conditions e.g. Parkinson's Disease

Fluency

Fluency is the ability to speak smoothly with a natural flow, without undue hesitation, repetition, or struggle.

Typical issues:

  • Repeating sounds, syllables, or words (e.g., "c-c-c-cat").

  • Prolonging sounds (e.g., "sssssssnake").

  • Involuntary pauses or blocks where no sound comes out.

  • Visible tension or struggle when trying to speak.

  • Speaking too fast with a lack of clear articulation.

  • Omitting sounds or syllables, making speech hard to understand.

  • And many other issues.

May cause by:

  • Developmental reasons

  • Neurological Factors

  • Psychological Factors

  • Brain injury

Swallowing

Swallowing is the ability to effectively and safely transfer food from the mouth through the throat and oesophagus into the stomach.

Typical issues:

  • Unable to masticate food effectively.

  • Oral residue remains after swallowing.

  • Coughing during or after swallowing

  • Choking (Medical emergency)

  • Aspiration pneumonia

  • A feeling of food stuck in the food pipe.

  • Respiratory issues
